SP Coffee

This project is about creating more value for our Partner Farmers. It’s that simple. We create that value by purchasing a larger range of the coffees they produce—building stronger, more sustainable partnerships and allowing us to grow together.

The SP Project started in 2018 through a conversation with our partner farmer, Alejo Castro, at Volcan Azul in Costa Rica. We asked him a simple question: How can we create more value for you as a producer? His answer was equally simple. We needed to purchase a wider range of his coffees, and in larger volumes. At the time, we were purchasing only the very highest-quality lots from his farm — cultivars such as Geisha and SL28. But the reality is that much of the value for a producer comes from the larger volumes that make up the majority of their production. In Alejo’s case, that meant a washed lot of Caturra and Catuai. That conversation became the foundation of the SP Project. Today, we strive to work with an SP Coffee lot from each of our partner producers. These are great-quality coffees purchased in meaningful volumes. They allow us to create more value for our partner producers, while giving you a consistent, high-quality coffee. At the same time, working with a wider range of each producer’s harvest allows us to sharpen the quality and distinction of our April Selection and Limited lots even further. Better partnerships through buying more of what our partners produce. That is what makes the SP Project our Sustainability project. The coffees are roasted with a slightly more developed profile than our standard April Coffees, creating a sweeter, more balanced taste experience. In 2025, we opened our first SP Coffee Shop with the aim of sharing coffees from our Partner Farmers through our interpretation of a modern specialty coffee shop.
